Top 10 Home Remodel Design Trends for 2024

How do homeowners make design choices for home remodeling in 2024? Many are researching online at Houzz or Pinterest, and also using analog methods like a simple look through design magazines. In the end, they are looking for ideas that inspire them as they map out ideas for the ideal home renovation.

As a design-build firm, we are always digging deep looking at trends in the trades, and the features for which our clients are asking our expertise to bring to fruition. Here are the top 10 design trends we are seeing for 2024.

    1. Reinventing Outdoor Spaces

Homeowners are expecting more and more to not just have a yard, but to treat the yard as an integrated extension of the home. Outdoor living in New England means creating space that can function in warmer months and extend your enjoyment of the space throughout the year. Below is an example of blending outdoor seating and kitchen with landscape design that pays attention to creating interest in all seasons.

    2. Multi-Use Spaces

Where are the potential multi-use areas in your home? Or how about your kitchen? Making sure there are enough outlets and space at the island means cooking and homework, sending out that last email for work can happen in the same space.

    3. Kitchens – Niche Features Like a Coffee Station

This year, kitchens are becoming more and more the hub of activity in your home. A dedicated beverage station keeps non-cooks and guests in one area and out of the way of the food prep.

    4. Turning Primary Bathrooms into Day Spas

    5. Enhancing Mudroom/Laundry Rooms

In 2024, a mudroom/laundry room does not have to be where messes go to accumulate. With forethought on organization and utility, a mudroom and laundry room can fulfill its function with style.

    6. An Eye Toward Historical Colors

Historical does not mean “antiquated.” Use classic, rich tones to create pops of color in your renovated spaces.

    7. Designing for Sustainability

Older New England homes often have spectacular features. There is no need to demo unique features like built-in cabinets or other architectural gems. Refresh or repurpose those areas that make your home uniquely yours.

    8. Aging In Place – When Renovating Look Ahead to The Future

When renovating a bathroom, a curb-less shower can look great while being a feature people look for to age in place. Take the long view in 2024 and think about how you will use space now and in the future.

    9. Transitional Look – Classic Design That Is Fresh and Updated

Retaining classic charm does not mean things need to look “old fashioned.” Timeless design is created when traditional details are blended with modern convenience and sensibilities. This combination is very much on-trend for 2024.

Renovating your home is an opportunity to feature local craftsmanship and other artisan objects and materials. Elements like hand-crafted tiles, wood shelving, and natural stone can add character to newly constructed areas of your home.
